Proton VPN is the standalone VPN from the Proton suite: Swiss-based, open-source clients, independently audited, and the only well-known provider offering a free tier with no data cap. The free plan is slower and limited to a handful of countries, but it is not a trial and it does not sell your traffic — which is the usual catch with free VPNs and the reason most of them should be avoided.
Paid plans discount steeply on annual and two-year billing. If you want more than the VPN, the full Proton suite is better value than this plan plus separate subscriptions elsewhere.

- Slower on some routes, stronger on transparency and independence — different companies, open clients, audits published. If provider independence is why you are buying, that is the difference.
