How discounting works at Square
Square sells card readers, point-of-sale software and payment processing to small businesses, with no monthly minimum on the base tier: you buy a reader and pay a percentage of each transaction.
The hardware price is not the decision. Processing takes a percentage plus a fixed fee on every sale, forever, and across a year that dwarfs whatever the reader cost. A business taking a hundred pounds a day pays more in processing in a month than the reader cost once. Compare providers on the rate for your card mix and your average transaction size, not on the terminal.

Card-present, card-not-present, and international cards are priced differently. Work out the blended rate on your actual mix.
Watch the fixed fee on small transactions
A per-transaction fixed component hurts a coffee shop far more than a furniture shop. It can decide the provider.
Ask for custom pricing once volume justifies it
It is available and it is not offered automatically.
