Price the same hotel direct before booking
Chains increasingly match or beat OTA pricing for loyalty members, and a direct booking is far easier to change.

Free cancellation is per rate, not per site
The refundable rate costs more for a reason. On uncertain trips it is usually the cheaper choice overall.
